{Wedding Inspiration} A Vintage Affair – Andrea & Dave

by Danielle Fletcher

Today we are honored to share the real vintage wedding of Andrea and Dave Smith that took place at  Rivermont Collegiate/Bettendorf Mansion in Bettendorf, IA  on June 18, 2011. Their wedding was an affair that was done in true vintage fashion from  beginning to end. Here’s their story of love in bride’s words….

The Meeting…

Dave and I knew each other from the sports facility where I taught gymnastics  and he ran a tae kwon do school. He had asked me out a couple times but I kept saying no. Until I started nursing school. . I started clinicals my very first semester of school at the hospital where Dave was a physical therapist and guess who was assigned the same patients? After two years of saying no, I finally decided to give him a chance and the rest is history.

It was a few days before Easter and we had planned an Easter dinner just for us along with my son and Dave’s son.We also planned a little Easter egg hunt for the boys. We both filled eggs to hide for the boys but Dave insisted that he was going to hide them himself.  Dave hide the eggs and passed out the baskets to the boys and to my surprise he gave me one too. Well, I found my eggs pretty easily because Dave hid them in a place where I couldn’t really miss them. I popped one of the eggs open to see what I got. M&M’s! So I started eating them not really paying much attention to what they looked like and then for some reason I looked down at them and guess what they said, “marry me?” I was shocked and wasn’t expecting it at all but in the end said YES! He had a beautiful ring he designed himself and it fit perfectly!

Planning the Wedding

After I graudated nursing school, I began planning our wedding. The more we searched, the more we fell in love with the vintage style. That was all I needed to get the creative juices flowing!. The very first thing we did was look at many different sites but as soon as we got out of the car at the Bettendorf Mansion, we knew that this was the one! It had such uniquely beautiful architectural elements that made for great wedding photos and backdrop for our vintage style wedding.

The Dress & More

I knew I wanted a lace dress because I love the scalloped edge of the skirt and thought it worked with our vintage style also. I  fell in love with a Sottero & Midgely dress that I originally refused to even try on.  I took off the huge 80’s bow and added an old rhinestone broach with feathers that I made to make it a little more vintage. I completed the look with a birdcage veil that  I designed and made. A huge thank you to my sister Carrie who was my model for the creation of this.

For my groom, we wanted a 3-piece suit for a vintage look and wanted a brown or khaki for a nice summer look. It was difficult, but we ended finding a great suit through JCPenney.  We completed Dave’s look with some pink argyle golf socks that also took forever to find but were worth every minute of the 4 months I searched!

The Wedding Day…

Our big day started out on a Saturday afternoon with our wedding in the patio area of the carriage house. After the ceremony, our guests toured the mansion  while we were doing photos and then they moved to the back terrace where we had the reception. We had outdoor lawn games like badminton, croquet and bags along with the photo booth and appetizers to entertain our guests until er arrived at the reception.

Dinner was BBQ style, which was perfect for an outdoor summer event. I knew I wanted the smell of the grill as we were preparing for dinner. Our guests had a great time and the kids had plenty of activities to do! Once it got dark the whole tent was glowing with 150 glow necklaces on the dance floor.

Our wedding ended up being absolutely perfect. Our bridal party consisted of our most wonderful, closest family and friends and they helped out so much! Our photographers Ericandi made our wedding look absolutely beautiful, I can’t say enough good things about them. My hairstylist was my cousin’s wife Cat Mandle and she did an exquisite job on my hair as well and my bridesmaid’s hair. Our vendors were all great! Believe it or not, we had a very small budget for our wedding.
